Virginia’s own Thomas Jefferson wrote these immortal words. On Independence Day, let’s take a moment out of our barbecueing to remember the sacrifices our forebears made and contemplate how we are going to contribute to fulfilling the promise of a more perfect union.

Whether you are in the area for a destination wedding, a family reunion or a Stay-cation, here are a few sites to visit to commemorate our Independence Day. These sites are also nearby, any time of the year, if you are attending an event at Cary Hill 1741. At some of these sites, you can learn a lot more about the Revolutionary War than you did in school. Or, at some sites, you may just want to sit in quiet contemplation of the sacrifices our ancestors made and for the republic they were striving to create.

Just a short, charming drive along The Colonial Parkway from Williamsburg to Yorktown is The American Revolution Museum

Formerly known as The Yorktown Victory Center, this museum features exhibits of the years leading up to the Revolution and through the implementation of The Constitution. If your plans don’t take you to Yorktown, they have a wealth of online programs: https://jyfmuseums.org/at-home/

Yorktown Battlefield

A short drive from the American Revolution Museum is the battlefield where America won it’s independence from Britain and Washington received the surrender from Cornwallis. You can drive around the battlefield to see different important sites. It’s easy to miss things when driving around a battlefield so they have developed an app that will guide you. Battle of Green Spring

Just outside of Williamsburg, you can visit the site of the battle that preceded Yorktown. Here you can learn how Mad Anthony Wayne lead a charge against Cornwallis and affected the outcome of the entire war. Click on the image to the left for further information.
